RESEARCH
My research can be split into two parts. The first one is sea-ice modelling and the
second one is investigating ocean-ice-atmosphere interactions during the Little Ice Age and the industrial era. In collaboration with Jean-Francois Lemieux, Bruno Tremblay and David Holland, we transformed the granular sea-ice model of Tremblay and Mysak (1997, J. Phys. Oceanogr.) from Cartesian to spherical coordinates and then coupled it to the global Earth System Climate Model from the University of Victoria (UVic ESCM). This work has been published in J. of Climate in Dec. 2007. With the granular model in spherical coordinates, we hope to bring some diversity into global sea-ice simulations and to address different questions which can further the understanding of the role of sea-ice dynamics in climate variability and change. The new coupled model is applied to the period of the Little Ice Age (LIA) (1500-1850) and the industrial era (1850-2000). We are particularly interested in the sea-ice and ocean behaviour and their interactions during this time period. Intuitively, the colder LIA should have had an enhanced sea-ice cover. We showed that this is indeed the case in the Northern Hemisphere where advective and thermodynamical changes are of similar magnitude. In the Southern Hemisphere, on the other hand, sea-ice advection plays a more important role and no long-term trends in the sea-ice cover are visible during the LIA. While it is generally accepted that the ocean was not a main forcing factor in causing the LIA, there are some interesting questions, such as redistribution of heat and the amplification or reduction of the atmospheric temperature signal through the global ocean circulation. Also, during the LIA, the global upper ocean (top - 300m) was roughly 0.7C colder than today. This may have different implications on the structure of the interior ocean.
